About this place

Originally a Hakka walled village built in the late 19th century by the Wong clan, this 500 square meter open air museum features dwellings, pigsties, a cattle shed, a 6 meter high watchtower, and a spacious drying terrace. Families visit to experience a tranquil, scenic nature walk alongside the river and to get a hands on history lesson by exploring the preserved structures furnished with traditional Hakka everyday objects and farming implements.

Stroller Accessibility

The trail leading to the museum is paved and stroller friendly, but the museum itself is built on a raised platform with over ten stone steps and narrow rooms. Plan to park your stroller at the entrance.

No Restrooms or Food

There are no toilets or dining facilities at the museum. The nearest public restrooms are at the Pak Tam Chung Visitor Centre at the start of the trail, so use them and pack snacks before walking.

Free Admission

Admission to the museum is completely free for everyone, making it a budget friendly and educational day out for the whole family.

Seasonal Opening Hours

Opening hours vary by season. The museum closes at 6:00 pm from March to September, and at 5:00 pm from October to February. It is closed on Tuesdays and the first two days of Chinese New Year.

Getting here

By MTR

Take MTR to Hang Hau Station (Exit B1), transfer to Green Minibus 101M to Sai Kung Town, then take a bus or minibus to Pak Tam Chung.

By Bus

Take KMB Route 94 from Sai Kung Town, or Route 96R on Sundays and public holidays from Diamond Hill. Alight at Sheung Yiu and walk 15 minutes.

By car

Drive to Sai Kung and park at the Pak Tam Chung Public Car Park. Walk 15 minutes along the trail. Private vehicles without a permit cannot pass the barrier.

By Taxi

Take a Green taxi from Sai Kung Town to the Pak Tam Chung barrier drop off point, then walk 15 minutes on foot.

How long is the walk to the museum from the bus stop?
It is a flat, easy 15 minute walk (approx. 1 km) along the scenic Pak Tam Chung Nature Trail.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes, the trail leading to the museum is very popular with dog owners, and dogs are welcome on the trail.
Is there any food or water available at the site?
No. There are no vending machines or kiosks at the museum. You can purchase snacks and drinks near the Pak Tam Chung bus terminus or holiday camp before setting off.
What is there for kids to actually see?
Children can see original farm dwellings, traditional kitchens with old stoves, a cattle shed, pigsties, and a 6 meter high defensive watchtower. There is also a restored historic lime kiln located just outside the museum walls.
Do we need to book tickets in advance?
No booking is required. Admission is free, and you can simply walk in during opening hours.
