About this place

This unique branch of the Hong Kong Museum of History preserves Hong Kong's oldest known unearthed structure, a symmetrical, cross-shaped brick tomb dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 to 220 AD). Families visit to marvel at this ancient monument through a glass protective viewing panel, explore a small, highly educational exhibition of 58 unearthed pottery and bronze relics next door, and stroll the tranquil, classical Han-themed garden right beside the museum.

Things to know

Manage Expectations Early

Remind children beforehand that they cannot actually step inside the physical tomb. The tomb is sealed behind a glass viewing panel to maintain strict temperature and humidity controls for preservation.

Spend Time Outdoors

Right next to the museum is the classical Han Garden, featuring Chinese-style pavilions, rockeries, bridges, and a koi fish pond, perfect for active kids to release energy after the quiet indoor tour.

Grab Educational Resources

The museum's website offers downloadable worksheets customized for primary and secondary school students. Print these out ahead of time to make the visit more interactive.

Stroller Accessibility

The museum is equipped with a barrier-free ramp at the entrance and automatic doors. However, the exhibition gallery is quite small, so a lightweight, compact stroller is recommended.

Good to know

Can kids walk inside the actual tomb?
No. For conservation and structural preservation, visitors are not allowed to enter the brick tomb. However, there is a large, clear glass viewing panel at the entrance passage that allows families to peer directly inside and clearly see the ancient brickwork and cross-shaped layout.
How much does admission cost?
Admission is completely free for all visitors to both the museum and the adjacent Han Garden.
Is the museum stroller-friendly?
Yes. It features wheelchair- and stroller-accessible ramps at the entrance and automatic doors. Note, however, that the indoor exhibition space is compact, so larger strollers may feel cumbersome.
How long will we spend there?
Inside the museum itself, most families spend about 15 to 30 minutes, as it is relatively small. Budgeting an extra 30 to 45 minutes for the outdoor garden brings a typical visit to roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.
Are there public toilets or a baby care room inside?
The museum is very small and does not have dedicated baby-care or nursing facilities. Standard public restroom options are located nearby in the adjacent gardens and playgrounds.
