About this place

Spanning 6,500 square meters in Tai Po Market, this open-air museum is built around the original site of the historic Old Tai Po Market Railway Station. It preserves indigenous Chinese station architecture and features an array of vintage steam and diesel-electric locomotives, historic passenger coaches, and interactive railway exhibits. Families flock here because it offers children a highly tactile, hands-on way to explore real historic trains and walk along authentic, inactive tracks in a spacious outdoor setting.

Things to know

Watch Your Step on the Tracks

Although the tracks are no longer active, the outdoor ground consists of real gravel, wooden sleepers, and metal rails. Keep a close eye on toddlers, as the uneven ground is a tripping hazard.

Stroller Limitations

While strollers can navigate some outdoor paved pathways, pushing them over the gravel track beds is highly difficult. Strollers must be folded and left outside when boarding the vintage train coaches.

No Food and Drinks

Eating and drinking are strictly prohibited within the exhibition galleries and museum grounds. Plan snacks and meals before or after visiting; the museum is surrounded by excellent local cafes in Tai Po.

Insect Repellent & Sun Protection

Because a major portion of the museum is outdoors with surrounding trees, bringing mosquito repellent and sunscreen is highly recommended, especially during the summer months.

Good to know

Is there an admission fee to enter the Hong Kong Railway Museum?
No, admission to the museum is completely free of charge, making it a highly budget-friendly and educational outing for families.
Can children go inside the vintage train carriages?
Yes! One of the biggest highlights for kids is boarding the historic, retro passenger carriages. Children are welcome to sit on the old wooden and cushioned benches to experience what train travel was like in the past.
Is the museum stroller and wheelchair-friendly?
Yes and no. The museum features barrier-free ramps at the office and inquiry counters. However, pushing strollers or wheelchairs across the outdoor gravel train tracks is very rough, and boarding the historic train coaches is not wheelchair-friendly due to the steps.
When is the best time to visit?
For a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds and better photo opportunities on the tracks, visit on a weekday morning. Visiting during the cooler months (October to March) is also recommended.
Are there baby care or restroom facilities inside?
The museum has basic restroom facilities and is wheelchair accessible. However, dedicated baby care or breastfeeding rooms are not confirmed to be available at this specific Tai Po branch.
