About this place

Housed within the historic, late 19th-century Lei Yue Mun Fort built in 1887, this public military-themed museum is perched 64 meters above sea level overlooking the narrow Lyemun Pass. It features 11 permanent galleries tracing 600 years of coastal defence history alongside a deep focus on Hong Kong's role in the War of Resistance against Japanese aggression. Families can enjoy a unique combination of immersive indoor historical and multimedia exhibits, panoramic harbor views, and a scenic, light hike along the 24-checkpoint outdoor Historical Trail to explore authentic military tunnels, historic batteries, tanks, and cannons.

Things to know

Bring Bug Spray

The outdoor Lyemun Fort Historical Trail is heavily wooded, and parents strongly advise applying mosquito or insect repellent before visiting.

Wear Sturdy Walking Shoes

Exploring the 24 checkpoints of the Historical Trail requires walking up steep hills, narrow historic tunnels, and navigating many flights of stairs.

Use the Lift Shortcut

If you are visiting with younger children or prefer to avoid an immediate uphill climb, take the passenger elevator from the 1/F Reception Lobby straight up to the 8/F Redoubt.

Pack Extra Snacks and Water

There is an on-site cafe operated by a social enterprise that sells coffee, tea, and basic snacks. However, it is quite small and has a limited menu, so parents should bring their own kids' snacks.

Good to know

Is admission free for kids and families?
Yes, admission to all permanent exhibitions and the outdoor Historical Trail is entirely free for all visitors.
Is the museum stroller-friendly?
The indoor portion of the museum (the Redoubt) is fully accessible via passenger elevators. The outdoor Historical Trail is paved and mostly stroller-friendly, but parents should note that some historic checkpoints, battery ruins, and military trenches feature steep slopes and stairs that are inaccessible with a stroller.
Is there food or dining available inside the museum?
Yes, there is a small, budget-friendly cafe on-site operated by a local social enterprise. It offers simple snacks, coffee, and tea. However, because the menu is very basic, it is recommended to pack extra drinks and snacks for kids.
Can we park our car at the museum on a Sunday or Public Holiday?
No. Due to high demand, the onsite visitor carpark is strictly reserved for passenger pick-up and drop-off only on weekends and public holidays. General visitor parking (free for up to 3 hours) is only available on weekdays.
How do we get to the top of the fort if my kids are too tired to hike?
You can easily bypass the uphill climb by taking the large passenger elevator from the 1/F Reception Lobby straight up to the 8/F Redoubt where the main indoor exhibits are located. You can then walk down the slopes at your own pace to explore the outdoor sites.
