Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau
Busy times
About this place
Managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of Hong Kong, this open-air public recreation venue is situated directly in front of the historic, Grade 1 Yuk Hui Temple (Pak Tai Temple). It features free outdoor sports facilities, including a 7-a-side soccer pitch and basketball courts. Families and cultural tourists visit the playground to soak in the island's unique heritage, enjoy a safe vehicle-free environment, and experience the world-famous annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival, which is held right on this site.
Things to know
Car-Free Safety
The absolute absence of motor vehicles throughout Cheung Chau creates an incredibly safe and relaxed environment where children can run and explore without traffic worries.
Beat the Heat
The playground is entirely outdoor and has very little canopy shade. During hot months, it is best to visit before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to avoid peak sun exposure.
Pack the Essentials
Bring sunscreen, hats, water, and snacks. There are no retail kiosks inside the immediate sports grounds (though plenty of local cafes and bakeries are a short walk away on the surrounding streets).
Peak Crowds
During the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival (typically in May), this exact playground becomes heavily congested with visitors and temporary structures. It is not stroller-friendly during this period.
