About this place

Tai Choi Yuen Playground is a public municipal park managed by Hong Kong's Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). Located in a quiet residential pocket on the vehicle-free island of Cheung Chau, it serves as a safe local spot where children can play and run around without the hazard of oncoming traffic, while parents relax in the shaded seating areas.

Things to know

Vehicle-Free Environment

Because Cheung Chau prohibits private cars and taxis, parents must be prepared to walk. Strollers are highly recommended for toddlers.

Refurbished Facilities

The playground's shaded pavilion, seating benches, and chess tables were completely replaced in late December 2024, offering a clean resting area.

Beat the Heat

The play area is completely outdoors with limited shade. During summer, the best times to visit are early mornings or late afternoons.

Outdoor Essentials

There are no commercial kiosks inside. Parents should pack plenty of drinking water, sun hats, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.

Good to know

Is there any entry fee for the playground?
No. Like all municipal playgrounds run by the LCSD in Hong Kong, entry is completely free of charge.
Are there barrier-free facilities for strollers and wheelchairs?
Yes. The playground was retrofitted with barrier-free upgrades, including flat access entryways, tactile guide paths, and braille maps.
Are there restrooms inside the playground?
There are no dedicated restrooms built directly inside this small playground. However, public toilets are easily accessible nearby, such as at the Cheung Chau Sports Ground.
Can we rent bicycles nearby to get there?
Yes. Bicycle rental shops are widely available near the Cheung Chau Ferry Pier. Biking is a very popular way for families to navigate the island, though riding directly inside the playground is not permitted.
Is the playground busy during local festivals?
Yes. During the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival (usually in May), the Piu Sik Parade route runs directly along Tai Choi Yuen Road. The area becomes extremely crowded and heavily managed by local police.
