About this place

Managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), this outdoor public recreation ground sits in a scenic coastal area of Lantau Island. Families visit to let children play on the outdoor playground equipment, enjoy a casual game of basketball or mini-soccer, or rest on garden benches while soaking in the rustic, slower-paced village atmosphere and stunning waterfront views of Tai O. It is also designated as an "Inclusive Park for Pets," meaning families can bring their dogs to enjoy the space.

Things to know

Remote Journey

Reaching Tai O involves a long combined journey by MTR and bus or ferry. While it is a great day trip adventure, parents should plan travel times and transit schedules carefully.

Road Access Restrictions

Private cars are strictly prohibited on South Lantau roads without a Lantau Closed Road Permit. Families cannot simply drive to the playground in a standard private vehicle.

Minimal Shade

Because the recreation ground is an outdoor, seaside venue, the play area has very little shade. It is crucial to bring hats, sunscreen, umbrellas, and insect repellent.

Water Dispensers

A Watsons Water "Drops of Fun" water bottle refilling station is available onsite, so parents should bring reusable water bottles.

Good to know

What kind of play facilities are available for kids at the recreation ground?
The recreation ground provides a standard children's playground featuring classic play equipment (such as climbing frames and swings). There is also a hard-surface basketball court that doubles as a mini-soccer pitch where older kids can run and play ball.
Is there a public toilet nearby?
Yes, the recreation ground is equipped with clean public toilets, changing rooms, and an accessible toilet. This is a vital stop for families, as there are very few public toilets along Shek Tsai Po Street when walking from the main bus station.
Can we bring our family dog to the park?
Yes! Tai O Recreation Ground is a designated "Inclusive Park for Pets". Families are welcome to bring their dogs to the designated areas, but dogs must be kept on a leash, and owners must clean up after them using the provided dog excreta collection bins.
Is there seating and shade available for parents while kids play?
Yes, there are garden benches and a spectator stand with 100 seats. It is a peaceful spot to sit, feel the sea breeze, and look out over the beautiful waterfront. However, there is minimal overhead shade on the play areas, so parents should dress children in sun-protective clothing and hats.
Can we drive there directly and park?
No. There is no public onsite parking available at the recreation ground. Furthermore, south Lantau roads are restricted, meaning you cannot drive a private car to Tai O without a special Lantau Closed Road Permit. Taking public transport (MTR, bus, or ferry) is the only realistic way to visit.
