About this place

Sha Lo Wan Playground is a small, public outdoor recreational venue managed by Hong Kong's Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). Tucked away in the historic, car-free village of Sha Lo Wan on northwest Lantau Island, it features a basic children's play area and a basketball court. Families and outdoor enthusiasts typically visit the playground as a scenic rest stop while hiking the Tung O Ancient Trail or during a ferry excursion. It is popular for its peaceful rural atmosphere and its location directly across the water from Hong Kong International Airport, making it an excellent spot for watching planes take off and land.

Things to know

Zero Car Access

There is absolutely no way to drive or take a taxi directly to the playground. Plan to either hike in or arrive via ferry.

Extreme Remoteness and Limited Amenities

Sha Lo Wan is a very quiet, depopulated village. While there are a couple of local village stores selling basic drinks and light snacks, their hours are highly irregular and they are mostly open on weekends and public holidays. Always pack plenty of water, snacks, and any child essentials.

Loud Aircraft Noise

Because the playground sits directly across from the airport runways, planes fly very close and can be extremely loud. While exciting for kids who love aviation, the noise might startle or scare highly sensitive toddlers.

Sun and Bug Protection

The playground is fully outdoor and offers minimal shade. Sun hats, sunscreen, and strong insect repellent are absolute musts.

Getting here

By MTR

Take the MTR Tung Chung Line to Tung Chung Station. From there, you must either walk to the Tung Chung Development Pier (approx. 10 to 15 minutes) to catch the ferry, or embark on a 1.5 to 2 hour walk along the Tung O Ancient Trail.

By Bus

No buses drive directly to the playground. Take any airport E-line bus or New Lantao Bus to Tung Chung Station, then proceed by ferry or on foot.

By car

Not possible as there is no road access to Sha Lo Wan. If traveling by car, park at a public facility in Tung Chung (such as Citygate Outlets) and transfer to the ferry.

By Walking

From Tung Chung MTR Station, follow the paved concrete path of the Tung O Ancient Trail heading toward Tai O, passing Hau Wong Temple. The walk is flat but long, taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

Good to know

Can we push a stroller from Tung Chung to Sha Lo Wan Playground?
While the Tung O Ancient Trail from Tung Chung is mostly paved and relatively flat, it is a long hike of about 6 km, taking 1.5 to 2 hours. Pushing a stroller is possible but physically demanding due to minor steps and slopes. Taking the ferry is highly recommended for families with younger kids.
How do we get there if we have toddlers and cannot do the long walk?
The easiest way is to take the Fortune Ferry from the Eastern Berth of Tung Chung Development Pier or Tuen Mun Pier, and alight at Sha Lo Wan Pier. From there, it is a flat, easy 10 to 12 minute walk along the concrete path to the playground.
What play facilities are there at the playground?
The facilities are basic and managed by the government. It features one outdoor basketball court and a small set of children's play equipment. There is also a hard-surface soccer pitch nearby.
Are there baby changing rooms or dining facilities at the playground?
No. This is a very rustic village playground with no modern family rooms, changing tables, or restaurants. There are public village toilets nearby, but they are basic.
Is admission free, and do we need to book in advance?
Yes, admission is completely free and open to the public. No advanced booking is required to use the children's play area or the basketball court.
