About this place

Managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Lin Ma Hang Playground is located in the remote, historic Hakka village of Lin Ma Hang, situated directly along the Shenzhen border. It features a basic outdoor layout with open grassy space, play structures, and a badminton court. Rather than a standalone destination, families and outdoor enthusiasts visit this playground as a scenic resting point during historical excursions to the adjacent Robin's Nest Country Park and the newly restored Lin Ma Hang Lead Mine open-air museum.

Things to know

Closed Area Restrictions

The road leading to Lin Ma Hang Village lies within the Frontier Closed Area (FCA). While passengers riding the designated green minibus are exempt from needing a permit, anyone attempting to access the village by private car, taxi, walking, or cycling along the road must hold a valid Frontier Closed Area Permit.

Unreliable Mobile Signal

Due to its location right against the mainland Chinese border, Hong Kong mobile network signals are extremely weak. Phones frequently hop onto mainland Chinese roaming networks. Parents should download offline maps and prepare for limited communication.

No Local Shops

There are no convenience stores, restaurants, or kiosks in the village. You must bring your own water, snacks, formula, and baby supplies.

Excellent Restroom Facilities

The Lin Ma Hang (1) Public Toilet is located directly adjacent to the playground, providing a vital, accessible facility for families.

Good to know

Do we need to apply for a Closed Area Permit to visit the playground with our kids?
No, provided you travel on the official Green Minibus Route 59K from Sheung Shui Station. Passengers on this specific minibus route are legally exempt from the permit requirement. However, if you try to walk, cycle, or drive down Lin Ma Hang Road to reach it, you will be stopped by police without a permit.
Is the hike to the playground and the nearby Lin Ma Hang Lead Mine safe for younger children?
No, the hiking routes (such as the Robin's Nest Country Trail from Sha Tau Kok) are physically demanding, steep, and take 4 to 5 hours. They are only suitable for older, experienced children. For families with younger kids, the only easy option is to take the 59K minibus directly to the village terminus next to the playground.
Are there places to buy food, snacks, or milk near the playground?
No. Lin Ma Hang is a remote, undeveloped border village with no commercial retail outlets, cafes, or supermarkets. Parents must pack and carry all refreshments for their children.
Is there a public restroom at the playground?
Yes, the Lin Ma Hang (1) Public Toilet is situated right next to the playground, making it very convenient for families.
Will my phone have service at the playground if I need to call someone?
Cellular reception is notoriously spotty. Parents are advised to activate mainland China roaming data beforehand, as your phone is highly likely to connect to Shenzhen cell towers instead of Hong Kong carriers.
