About this place

Housed in a beautifully preserved 3-story Edwardian-style red-brick monument built in 1906, this unique museum maps the development of healthcare and medicine in Hong Kong. It is one of the first museums in the world to compare and contrast Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Scientific Medicine. Families can explore historical medical exhibits, see a 100-year-old laboratory, and stroll through the scenic herbal garden.

Things to know

Ditch the Stroller

Because the museum is a declared historical monument, its architectural structure has been strictly preserved. There are no public elevators or ramps inside the building, and it features multiple flights of steep, narrow stairs. Using a baby carrier is highly recommended.

Affordable Admission

Admission is HKD 20 for adults, HKD 10 for children (under 6), students, and seniors. A cost-effective Family Ticket is available for HKD 50 (covers up to 2 adults and 3 children).

Combine with Outdoor Play

The museum is located right next to the Caine Road Playground and is steps away from Blake Gardens, making it very easy for kids to burn off energy outdoors before or after your museum visit.

Photography Restrictions

Using a camera flash is strictly prohibited inside the museum building at all times.

Guide

Getting here

By MTR

Take the Island Line to Sai Ying Pun Station (Exit C), walk eastwards along Bonham Road and Caine Road to Ladder Street, then walk down and turn left into Caine Lane. Alternatively, take Sheung Wan Station (Exit A1 or A2) and walk up the steep steps of Ladder Street (approx. 12 to 15 minutes).

By Bus

Take any bus or green minibus running via Caine Road and alight at the Ladder Street or Seymour Road stop. Walk down Ladder Street and make an immediate left onto Caine Lane. Useful routes include buses 12, 12M, 13, 23, 23B, 40, 40M, 103, and minibuses 8, 10, 22, 28, 31.

By car

Drive towards Caine Lane. Note that there is no onsite public parking. You can park at nearby public paid garages such as Centrestage Parking on Bridges Street or Wilson Parking on Hollywood Road.

By Taxi

Taxis can drive directly to the side entrance on Caine Lane for a convenient, stair-free drop-off. Note that Caine Lane is narrow with highly restricted turn-around space.

By Walking

To minimize walking uphill, take the Central-to-Mid-Levels Escalators from Central to Caine Road. Walk west along Caine Road to Ladder Street, then take the steps down to Caine Lane.

Good to know

Is the museum accessible for strollers or wheelchairs?
Generally no. The historic red-brick building is preserved with its original layout, which includes many staircases and no public lifts. Wheelchair users can request a temporary ramp from staff to view the ground floor, but the upper and lower levels are inaccessible without climbing stairs. Parents should use a baby carrier instead of a stroller.
Will my younger children (under 6) find the exhibits engaging?
The museum's inside galleries are somewhat academic, featuring text-heavy histories of plagues, vaccines, and vintage medical gear. While older kids find the old laboratory and acupuncture models fascinating, younger toddlers will likely be most entertained by matching real plants in the outdoor Herbal Garden or visiting the playgrounds nearby.
Is there a cafe or place to buy food inside the museum?
No, there are no dining facilities or food stalls inside. However, the trendy Po Hing Fong neighborhood immediately outside is filled with excellent family-friendly bakeries (like Po's Atelier) and local cafes.
How do we avoid walking up the grueling hills with kids?
The Mid-Levels is notoriously steep. To avoid carrying kids up the massive staircases from Sheung Wan, take the Central-to-Mid-Levels Escalator from Central MTR to Caine Road. From there, it is a much flatter walk with only a short descent down to Caine Lane. Alternatively, taking a taxi directly to the gate is highly recommended.
Can we buy tickets in advance?
Yes, you can purchase tickets online via major local travel platforms (such as Klook or Trip.com) for convenience, or purchase them directly at the reception.
