About this place

Kat O Playground is a public outdoor recreational facility on the remote and historic Kat O Island. Perfect as a sports spot or a relaxing rest stop while walking the family-friendly Kat O Heritage Trail, it features public sports courts surrounded by tranquil, rural greenery.

Things to know

Limited Ferry Service

Ferries to Kat O are highly restricted, operating mainly on weekends and public holidays (from Ma Liu Shui) or selected weekdays (from Tai Shui Hang). Missing the return ferry means being stranded on a remote island.

Closed Area Permit (CAP)

If departing from Sha Tau Kok Public Pier, you must apply for a valid Tourism Closed Area Permit online from the Hong Kong Police Force in advance. Permits are not required if taking ferries from Ma Liu Shui or Tai Shui Hang.

Pack Your Own Provisions

There are only a few local Hakka eateries with irregular opening hours. Parents must pack plenty of water, baby supplies, snacks, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.

Check the Weather

The playground is fully outdoors with minimal shelter. Avoid visiting on stormy or excessively hot days.

Good to know

Is there a fee?
No. Public playgrounds in Hong Kong are free to enter and run by the LCSD.
What ages is this best for?
Most LCSD playgrounds suit ages 2 to 12, with separate toddler and older kid equipment. The exact setup varies by site.
Are there toilets nearby?
Usually yes. Most LCSD parks have public toilets within a five minute walk, and the nearest MTR station is a good backup.
What is the best time to go?
Mornings before noon are cooler and quieter, and late afternoon after the school rush works well too. In summer, avoid roughly noon to 3pm.
