About this place

Shek O Beach is one of the most popular and picturesque public beaches in Hong Kong. Families flock here to escape the bustling city, build sandcastles, play in the clean shallow waters, hike easy family-friendly trails, and enjoy beachside barbecues or dining in the adjacent historic Shek O Village.

Things to know

Beat the Heat

Hong Kong's summer humidity can be intense. The best beach windows for younger children are from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to avoid peak UV rays.

Rentals Available

Local vendors rent out umbrellas and beach lounge chairs for around HKD 100 to HKD 150 for the entire day, saving you from carrying heavy gear.

No Dogs on Main Beach

Dogs are not allowed on the main public beach. If visiting with a dog, walk five minutes north past the old bus terminus to the dog-friendly Shek O Back Beach.

Logistics & Crowds

Avoid leaving between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM on sunny weekends due to massive bus queues. Consider leaving earlier or sharing a taxi to Shau Kei Wan.
